What not to do after winning the lottery

1

The recent billion dollar Powerball  caused a frenzy in the country.  For two weeks straight you couldn’t escape “Powerball” talk or news.  Financial Expert Donnell Bobo of DB Financial says, “While the chance of hitting the lottery causes excitement and daydream fantasies of a changed, happier, stress- free life, the exact opposite happens to many winners.”

lottery

Some lottery winners’ stories have ended tragically.  The pages of their life after becoming instant millionaires are filled with loss, suicide, murder, divorce and more.  Bobo says this may cause people to think that  the philosophy of “money is the root to all evil” is correct.  Bobo refutes this and explains that the lust of money and lack of education, financial literacy and discipline are the contributing factors to why instant millionaires go broke. “Money without discipline  is the root to evil and the idea that more money equals happiness is what ends up disappointing many people.”

Business Insider  spoke to Robert Williams, a professor of health sciences and gambling studies at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, who said, “Perhaps the biggest problem with modern lotteries is how they portray the effects of winning. They deceptively convey the notion that life will improve,” Williams said, when in fact, “we adapt to our material gains.”In other words, while you might be happy for the first few months after you hit the jackpot, eventually that elation will wear off and you’ll have new concerns, like the stock market.

Donnell Bobo’s Tip of what not to do after winning the lottery.

Spending Carelessly with no Financial Advisors

Many winners are people who were not financially well off before, therefore they don’t know how to manage having so much money so they just go crazy and spend carelessly.  Some  try to give it away to friends, family etc  and some just  blow it.  They allow people to use them.  They don’t have a financial adviser to help manage those finances.

For example a North Carolina poor single mom named Maria Holmes  won a $188 million Powerball jackpot last year. She has spent a quarter of her earning bailing out her boyfriend  Lamarr “Hot Sauce,” McDow out of jail for multiple drug and weapons violations.  Holmes’  boyfriend has cost her millions already. Not smart.

Bad Investments with no plan for the future.

When you’re not used to having a lot, sometimes you spend a lot thinking the money will last forever. You have to really save and invest in things that appreciate not depreciate.  I truly had a client that needed help after they won the lottery but they came to me in the last year of the 20 year payout. This was a mistake in itself because annuity payments are worth less than the actual win. By the last year they were going broke and didn’t want to let the high life go.  Now that person is drinking their life away.

Non Stop Gambling, bad business and the high life

People who play the lottery a lot are already spending money gambling what they can be investing.  Just because they win it doesn’t mean they stop gambling. Secondly you musttry to live below your means and continue working to bring in money.  people who live a very high life are usually wealthy and have had old money and are making more money.  If your lottery winnings are your only income the well will run dry.

According to My First Class Life ” When you gamble by buying a lottery ticket and end up winning $5 million, the first step is probably to stop gambling and start investing, right? Not if you’re Lou Eisenberg.

Instead, Lou decided to gamble away a good portion of his jackpot on the ponies down at the track and lost the rest of it on multiple divorces. Writing alimony checks sucks no matter how much money you have, and Lou’s checks are next to nothing these days. The only income Lou gets now is from social security.

Suzanne Mullins made some terrible financial decisions after winning more than $4 million in the Virginia lottery back in 2004. Instead of patiently waiting for her lump sum from the state, Suzanne decided to take out a big loan with high interest rates. Part of the condition of this loan was that Suzanne wouldn’t be able to receive her full winnings until the loan was completely paid off.

After Suzanne finally paid off the seemingly predatory loan, it made a nice dent into her earnings. When Suzanne’s son became ill, she didn’t have the insurance coverage necessary to treat him. By the time her son’s bill came in the mail, Suzanne owed the hospital more than $1 million. Take out the taxes, the loan payment and the medical bills, and Suzanne had next to nothing left”

How to grow and maintain healthy hair

With so  many pills, vitamins and products that claim to grow your hair, many women are confused about what to do.   In addition  we are still unsure about how using pills and different  products affects our  body and hormones. Atlanta’s top Master Stylist and natural hair specialist, Neheila Brown stopped by 7th and Lotus to talk about all of this and give us tips on how to grow and maintain healthy hair.

7 Tips on How to Grow and Maintain Healthy Hair with Nehelia Brown.

What is your styling background?

I specialize in  natural hair and extensions. I have been doing hair since I was a little girl in Jamaica.   I am a self-taught stylist  but as I got older I decided to turn my hobby into a profession. When I moved to Atlanta I obtained my cosmetology degree from CTC Chattahoochee Technical College  where I had the opportunity to work with  a lot of  different cultures and hair types.  I learned that different hair textures require different attention, care and products. There are a lot of women who have a hard time growing and maintaining healthy hair and there are endless products and pills in the market but i believe in the old school simple method of great hair care and a healthy diet.

1. Regular shampoo.  No matter if you hair is natural, relaxed, locked or if you have sew in extensions you have to shampoo and condition your hair on a regular basis.  Outside of your home hair care maintenance, I recommend visiting a stylist for a shampoo and condition at-least once a week..

I use the product Basic for my shampoos and conditioners.  I use fountain oils to keep scalps healthy and moisturized.   Jamaican black castor oil is a great conditioning oil and mighty roots should be used on your roots and edges 3 times a week for great regrowth.  (products can be purchased directly from me) In addition just drinking a lot of water and maintaining a healthy diet filled with lots of fruits and vegetables helps.

2. Trims! There is a false assumption about not cutting your hair in order for it to grow. Not true it is essential to get your ends trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks,

3. Hydration treatment deep condition treatment for specific hair types, Based on your hair I recommend a possible deep condition every two weeks.

4. Protein treatment for natural or processed hair, protein treatment restores and regrows your hair

5. Match your products with your hair type! It’s very important to know your hair type and know what products works with your hair and which products do not work.

6. If you have to get a relaxer to manage your hair no more than twice a year, only exceptions if you have a short haircut.

7. If you are natural to change it up you can do protected styles like sew- ins braids, or have a unit made.

How to get out of a rut!

Dose of Bliss owner and star journalist, Lindsay Hoffman shows you how to re-frame your situation and bounce back better than before.

lh

Get out of your rut by reframing the situation!

To Reframe– reframing a situation means to take a situation and think of it in a positive way. For more in depth information on reframing check out a post I wrote called ‘Find Opportunity In Any Situation

Everyone goes through rough times but it’s how we deal with those moments that we have control of. If we want something we must go up and get it. In case you happen to be going through one of those hard times, here is a new creative way to help you get out that rut and jump-start your path to success!

Below is a worksheet that I made where you can write down the things that are holding you back and reframe the situation to help propel you forward! Sometimes we just need to put it right in front of our face! I suggest taping this to your mirror when you are done as a reminder or keeping it somewhere you can look at it and watch how you’ll get closer to your goals and dreams.

happylife

Copy and past the text and fill out the guide below!

Exercise 1

What are three qualities you have that hold you back? Think of three things that you say to your self are reasons why you cannot achieve whatever it is your goals are. For example: I’m too nice, I’m not good enough, I get stressed easily, I’m not tall enough, etc.

  1. ______________

  1. ______________

  1. _____________

Now below write down why you feel these qualities hold you back.

Exercise 2

Now Let’s reframe it!

Write down how those three negative qualities can be positive qualities.

Example:

Negative quality: I’m too nice.

Reframed to positive: Being nice is an amazing quality that inspires others to be better and make peoples days better. Being nice can be used to my advantage and help me get to where I want to be by making others happy and comfortable.

Happy Faces_000008489021

Exercise 3

Now that you have identified what you feel holds yourself back and reframed the situation to realize that “weakness” can be turned into strength. Write down one to two (or more) easy ways to implement these new positive thoughts into your lifestyle.

Example:

Negative: I’m too nice

Reframed: Being nice is an amazing quality that inspires others to be better and make peoples days better. Being nice can be used to my advantage and help me get to where I want to be by making others happy and comfortable.

Lifestyle: I am going to write affirmations each day about how I make others happy and that I attract positivity to me. I am not going to get down on myself when I feel that I am overextending myself, instead I am going to recognize why I feel that way and work to learn how to say no sometimes.

Exercise 4

Get out into the world and do exercise 3! The only way to make a change in your life is by doing! What are you waiting for!

The Have & the Have Nots: The truth behind the Tyler Perry criticism

Tyler Perry is still on the fast track and last week OWN: (Oprah Winfrey Network) hosted a press luncheon at the Eventi Hotel in New York to celebrate the new seasons of their hit series “The Haves and the Have Nots” and “Love Thy Neighbor.” Perry along with cast members John Schneider, Angela Robinson, Palmer Williams, Jr and Patrice Lovely were in attendance to greet the 75+ guests and participate in a press conference-style Q&A.  Perry  and cast spoke to the media about all new episodes of  Love Thy Neighbor and   The Haves and the Have Nots.”

https://youtube.com/watch?v=8PZrau3o5P8%3Flist%3DPLFAF0HGlvTj4zVkAtlFd9fZBIXgVo_uFuframeborder%3D0allowfullscreen

Initially, I was going to write about “The Have and the Have Nots” but this whole TylerPerry and his critics focus that the media continues to play out disturbs me so I keep digressing from the scandal, betrayal and desire of this rating blockbuster and hit series. I’m often annoyed that I can’t read a Tyler Perry article without each writer discussing the criticism of Tyler Perry’s work, primarily because I think the issue  is disproportionately magnified by a small group of people and too many people are buying into the lie.

tikasumpter_johnschneider_01_640x400

The criticism is simply not as enormous as the media plays it out to be because numbers don’t lie and the ratings speak for themselves.  “The Have and Have Nots” season three finale was the 3rd highest scripted television episode on cable network. Fear the Walking Dead and Pretty Little Liars were the only television show episodes that ranked higher. With plays that sell out before I can make it to the FOX theater box office and blockbuster films that live on almost every weekend on TBS and Oxygen its factually and numerically correct to say Tyler Perry’s brand has more fans than critics.  (I pretty much know the entire dialogue of The Family that Preys and Good Deeds. I have already imagined the sequel of Good Deeds taking place in Zambia, Zanzibar and Atlanta) Honestly, writers and critics  create their own perception based on their isolated judgement and sometimes that comes with prejudice based on what we are conditioned to believe rather than truth.  Bluntly speaking, in America society has not raised its population to truly believe and accept self-reliance and sole independence from an African-American writer and filmmaker who produces stories that showcases the multi-dimensional elements and layers of Black people. Almost any individual can find a Tyler Perry character that relates to them or reminds them of someone in their family, or someone similar to a friend, aunty or ex-boyfriend from way-back.  Perry’s work is an intricate part of our culture and a glimpse of everyday people and there is nothing wrong with that. We are allowed to have story lines greater than what Hollywood wants to restrict us too.  While I understand the wounds that still bleed from America’s social construct in  2016 I think we can stop subconsciously punishing an African-American filmmaker for owning their own studio and doing things their way.  When people consistently pack out theaters for Madea and TPS films but we still construct articles to focus on the criticism of Tyler Perry’s work what is really being said is our demographic is not important, valuable or worthy of acknowledgement and representation in TV and film.  Maybe we don’t look the part, we don’t fit the Hollywood beauty mold or we can’t or shouldn’t speak the part and are not worthy enough to have our stories told.

Tyler+Perry+Taraji+P+Henson+41st+NAACP+Image+SE3W9j6gZHIl

The base of a lot of the Tyler Perry criticism is derived from the fact that traditionally we are supposed to be ignored and not represented. When Tariji P. Henson shaded Hollywood for finally giving her a Golden Globe award  for playing an ex-convict who sold crack there was absolute truth in her speech. Taraji’s roles in both “I can do bad by myself “and “the Family that Preys” were well written  roles. As always her work was excellent but perhaps those Tyler Perry roles didn’t fit into the Hollywood mold of how Hollywood want us to be seen and represented.  So the next time someone criticizes Tyler Perry’s highly rated shows, plays or film, look deeper into that criticism and the manipulative narrative behind it —even if it hurts because sometimes the truth hurts.  It’s fair to say for some of Hollywood’s Haves’ we will always only be acceptable on film as Have Nots.

Get the look! Fashion stylist Grecha “Nana” Roman shows you how.

0

Fashion stylist and upcoming Restaurant-er, Grecha “Nana” Roman is known for her high- end polished sophisticated looks with an edgy flair. The Miami native brings her sleek but trendy Latina flair into her wardrobe designs. Such was the case last Tuesday when Grecha with the assistance of Silas the Stylist styled our Managing Editor, Abesi Manyando for the We Tv Growing up Hip Hop Premiere. Grecha wanted to give Abesi a mixture of  retro sophistication with an edgy urban flair using sheer, lace and leather!

Classic sheer and leather looks as seen on Kim Kardashian, Nichole  Scherzinger and Olivia Palermo’s  all black & leather NYFW  (below) served as great  inspiration. Mixing this with Abesi’s favorite ballet inspired/Stepford wives look that she loves was all Grecha needed to begin. Check out how Nana achieved the look and how you can too.

“It was a chilly night and Abesi was leaning on wearing pants.  She prefers a comfortable but chic look that allows her to move around as she’s conducting interviews but at the same time my rule is that if you’re working on the red carpet either as a reporter or publicist you need to have a red carpet look to coordinate with the theme of your work/event.. Below are the pieces Silas and I put together for Abesi’s look.

She was initially hesitant about wearing a skirt but I had her covered.  Silas laid out the pieces she brought and we only chose a chic button-up sheer shirt from her look.  I thought it was journalism chic and I knew I could dress it up the way I envisioned her to be. It was a new year so I wanted to add to her style in a more edgier way but still keeping the preppy classic ballerina/stepeford wives look that she likes at times.

photo 1(1)
Grecha’s final look for Abesi

My pallet began with the the sheer black blouse and I added a sexy lace bra inside to compliment her shirt.  I then selected thick black classic stockings,  red bottom furry boots along with a Valentino wool coat that could keep her warm. I wanted her shirt buttoned all the way  to the top for an elegant look and I chose a very high fitted peplum leather black skirt without the flair to capture her shape and femininity matching my initial vision.  This look gave Abesi the sophisticated ballet and retro look that she loves and the stocking and red bottom furry boots added the trendy urban flair that I wanted to do.

This was obviously a very expensive look if you add the numbers but my look is easy to get for anyone and you don’t have to break the bank to achieve this look.  There are a few ways to mix up the look I did and make it it into your own.  Above are a few looks  that I saw and loved.” – , love Grecha… Nana to you..XOXO

For other reporters and publicists working the golden globes red carpet Grecha’s look will get you noticed. Grecha is available for personal styling for appearances, television and film.  Outside of fashion, she is a healthy food connoisseur and is currently working on her upcoming organic restaurant in Atlanta. You can find and follow Grecha on her Instagram.

Naomi, Cindy & Claudia: The original supermodels land Balmain

0

by Abesi Manyando— The women who inspired and defined the word “supermodels” just  landed Balmain’s 2016 campaign proving why their legendary beauty will always be in demand.  Time has had no effect on Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell whose is still snagging cover magazines and ruling the runway without missing a beat.

balmaincindybalmacindynbalmainclaus

The three beauties are 1/3rd of what was known as the “Big 6” in the nineties. – The close-knit group of popular supermodels included Naomi, Claudia, Cindy, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss. These women defined an era in which they became superstars. They replaced actresses as the driving force of brand endorsements, lucrative deals and film roles.  Balmain’s leading designer, Oliver Rousteing was uber-excited to work with the models in the Steven Klein–shot spread.

“Those four singular talents have inspired me from day one,” he said in a press release. “When I was a schoolboy in Bordeaux, it was their editorials that first made clear to me the amazing transformative power of fashion. Still today, many years on, their iconic images are often found amongst the jumble on mood boards in my (and almost every other designer’s) atelier. To say that working with them was a dream come true is no exaggeration.”

Angela Simmons, Romeo & Kristinia DeBarge star in We Tv’s Growing up Hip Hop

The seeds of some of hip hop’s most legendary acts are sharing screen time on We tv’s new reality show, “Growing Up Hip Hop. We tv and 135 street agency hosted a press-packed screening that required a mega-church styled overflow room because all of Atlanta’s celebrities, media and influences were in attendance. The stars of the show, Angela SimmonsRomeo MillerBoogie DashKristinia DeBargeTJ Mizell and Egypt Criss were on hand to enjoy the festivities with the 500 + local influencers at SCADShow, where the screening and Q&A moderated by multimedia personality Ebony Steele – took place.

Growing Up Hip Hop

Growing up hip hop is nothing like the other hip hop shows on air. It actually shares remnants of what Empire would be if it was a reality show.  The series is authentic and far from ratchet.  Instead of concocted story-lines, the show focuses on its stars trying to find their way through business and life while stepping outside of their famous parents’ shadows. The bridge between parents and seeds is highlighted in a conversation between Angela Simmons and Boogie’s dad, Damon Dash who is quick to shut down Angela’s perspective on stress.  Dash pretty much dismisses the idea that Angela knows what stress is due to the fact that she and the rest of the heirs did not have to endure the struggle, violence and obstacles their parents faced. Dash’s scenes, which are at times comical and wise steal the first half of the show’s premiere and add a needed element in T.V…realness.

guhhangela

Simmons and Romeo’s non relationship is an interesting piece of the show’s puzzle.   Despite not being a couple, the two hip hop heirs have a lot of  obvious chemistry which could truthfully complicate Romeo’s actual relationship. Singer, Kristinia DeBarge is navigating  life through the shadows of her famous R&B family and struggles with the idea of not being able to see her father who has battled addiction for years and is currently incarcerated.  Through all of this though, Kristinia seems to have raw talent.  By washing away her former bubble gum look and embracing an edgier R & B hip hop sound, Kristinia should be able to flourish in this business.  I guess we will all have to see tonight as “Growing Up Hip Hop” (#GUHH) premieres  10pm ET/PT on WE tv. Gwen Stefani shares remix & joins Trolls

Gwen Stefani surprised us today as she shared that she would be appearing in Dreamworks’ upcoming animation, “Trolls.” Gwen will lend her voice to the role of DJ Suki.  She joins Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand and Anna Kendrick in the upcoming film.

Gwen Troll

In addition to this we learned that our favorite unexpected winter heartbreak song has a remix.  Gwen just shared Maize’s electro-switch-up of her “Used to Love you” ballad and we love it.  The British/Australian duo add a faster tempo to the track without washing away the song’s emotional vulnerability which is key to preserving the essence of such a lyrically ironic song. “Suitcase, band-aids, pulling back out the driveway, you go I’ll stay, you can keep all the memories.”

I was hoping that Gwen would utilize her pain for musical good as she always has.  I must admit I felt guilty about toying with the idea that the drama played out in the tabloids would materialize into a body of work exuding pure excellence, but honestly Gwen seems to be giving us her absolute best.  She confessed to Zane Lowe that she had extensive writers block that she finally broke out of this past year. “I had a whole record in eight weeks, but I want to keep writing.  You have to understand how much I couldn’t write  and then all of a sudden I’m writing, writing, writing,” Gwen shared. Gwen’s next single is entitled, “Misery.” We’re happy that the current space of her life is far from miserable. Peep the links to the remix below. We wish you nothing but goodness and a blissful year Gwen.

Top 7 Signs it’s time to crowdfund

0

by Malena Amusa—The signs are there. Your mission wakes you in the middle of the night. It’s on your vision board. It’s scribbled in volumes of notepads. It’s the light of your soul, and you simply can’t stop talking about it! Suddenly you wake up to the headline that Levar Burton raised millions of  dollars to bring back Reading Rainbow, yes Reading Rainbow from way back then….

Orange Crowd Funding Button on Computer Keyboard. Internet Concept.

Well, strain your brain no further and let me assure you. It’s time to launch your crowd fund!  As a dance entrepreneur who has effectively raised $17K+ online for various projects, I can tell you, the experience is priceless. Even if you don’t reach your funding goal, you will test your idea and bolster your capacity to raise funds in the future.

Don’t talk yourself out of it. Decide now to believe in the power of crowdfunding. And when doubt strikes, review these top signs to know when the stars have truly aligned for you to crowdfund.

  1. Your story is pretty epic

You discovered your birth ties to Congolese refugees in your city and now want to assist your new-found friends. You invented a highly effective tool for improving learning in autistic children. Whatever your story, it’s thoroughly inspiring, epic even! Every winning crowd fund starts with a powerful story. If your tale moves people to joy or tears, you’re one step closer to a winning fundraiser.

  1. Your project is palpable

Are you raising funds for something people can see, read, experience, feel, track or buy? The more tangible your project, the more likely people will support it. We live in a product-driven world. If your goal involves something people can take home, you’re headed for crowdfunding victory.

crowdfunding-featured5

  1. Your friends are amped

When the people closest to you start saying things like, “I was thinking about your idea the other day, and I want to help,” or “You should write a book on that!”, or “Gee, you inspire me,” — then you have an amped network ready to donate on the spot. Crowdfunds run on passion. In my experience, one in 10 of my amped friends will donate to my campaign. The average donation on GoFundMe clocks in at $67. Do the math and start fundraising today!

  1. You know a journalist or two

You routinely write your online or local editors, know a couple journalists, or don’t mind building your Twitter following and cranking out the good news. Well then, you’re on your way to generating the buzz you’ll need to crowdfund.

  1. Your middle name is Superman

You’re the cape-less super hero with more good deeds under your belt than you can count. Now if you can turn your good deeds into a video of what you plan to do with the money, then it’s time to start your crowd fund!

  1. You got skin in the game

Gone are your days of savings, new clothes, expensive organic foods, and a new radiator — all because you’re building your dream. No, you’re not at the edge of despair, you’ve got skin in the game, and can steer the money in the right direction.

  1. You have a picture of LeVar Burton on your vision board

LeVar Burton, the host of Reading Rainbow, raised $6.4 million on Kickstarter to roll-out the digital version of his show. He’s now the poster child for crowdfunding. You aren’t nearly as famous as LeVar, but your mission is just as important. At the point that you’re idolizing other crowdfunding champs, you’ve signaled to the universe that you’re ready!

Your goal at this point is so wild and contagious, money is begging you to be donated. And let’s face it, you need the money, so be brave and get out there and crowd fund! Some popular platforms include GoFundMe, CauseVox, and GlobalGiving. These sites have developed crowdfunding into such a science, there’s almost a surefire benefit, not to mention, an easy-peasy way to determine how much and how fast you’ll raise your money.

Now, if your goal can not wait another day, then you, yes you, must launch your crowd fund right away!
