holiday pause..

Out of respect for true history and the sad massacre that wiped out an entire population of Native Americans, we  did not do a “thanksgiving” or black holiday post.  The irony of creating a day of thanks for all you have only to rush to the malls for all you think you need and more is interesting.  Nevertheless we hope the holidays will be a time of happiness, togetherness and self reflection. We love the positive spirit of the holidays but what if we lived like that all year around? yogaThe break does allow us to spend time with our families and friends.  Time is the most important thing you can have and the most expensive to lose, because once time passes you can’t take it back. Through the season we will share a few of our favorite things, lessons, tips, books, advice, thoughts and more.  Hopefully these things will be something you can add to your life for the better. If you have a few favorite things please feel free to share.  Enjoy your Saturday.  Take time out to be still, present, breathe and meditate.  Whatever keeps you centered and makes your soul happy, do that.

10 Reasons to quit drinking soda

0

Gelila Bekela

Because 7th and Lotus is all about becoming a better and healthier you, (mentally and physically) we absolutely have to stay on top of our wellness tips for you guys.  Today we  want to share why you have to quit drinking soda. We are currently compiling a list of alternatives but for now Katie at Wellness Mama has 10 important reason to just say no to soda. Make sure you visit her blog for all the reasons and subscribe because she can help you become the healthier you, you want to become.

Here are 10 Reason to quite drinking sodas!

Marc Jacobs' Fall 2014 collection was a study in tonality, and so were the wigs.

  1. A single can of soda contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This amount of sugar, especially in liquid form, skyrockets the blood sugar and causes an insulin reaction in the body. Over time, this can lead to diabetes or insulin resistance, not to mention weight gain and other health problems. Soft drink companies are the largest user of sugar in the country.
  2. Soda contains phosphoric acid, which interferes with the body’s ability to absorb calcium and can lead to osteoporosis, cavities and bone softening. Phosphoric Acid also interacts with stomach acid, slowing digestion and blocking nutrient absorption.
  3. In diet sodas, aspartame is used as a substitute for sugar, and can actually be more harmful. It has been linked to almost a hundred different health problems including seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes, and emotional disorders. It converts to methanol at warm temperatures and methanol breaks down to formaldehyde and formic acid. Diet sodas also increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, which causes belly fat, high blood sugar and raised cholesterol.water2
  4. Most sodas contain caffeine, which has been linked to certain cancers, breast lumps, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, and other problems.
  5. The water used in soda is just simple tap water and can contain chemicals like chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals.
  6. Harvard researchers have recently positively linked soft drinks to obesity. The study found that 12 year olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times. How to adjust your make-up for the winter.

darkciThe winter is here and more then just the weather changes as the season change.  Obviously depending on where you live your look changes for the winter. This doesn’t just mean clothes but make-up too. There are definite differences between summer and winter makeup.  Celebrity Esthetician and Make-Up artist, Cassandra Streater-Morrow came by 7th and Lotus to give us tips for seasonal looks. Check out her beauty tips below.

“Being an Esthetician as well as a makeup artist, I see all types of changes in the skin with  different skin types,  Of course the obvious is the shade but more importantly is the texture.  During Summer months the skin is more supple and the pores are more porus.  makeupblonYou sweat more and have a tendency to produce more oil.  In winter months the skin tightens up and  you are less porus so the skin can appear to be more dry. With all that being said the formula of foundations, blush and shadows will make a difference in your overall look.

1. Dark lips can be worn year round but dark doesn’t mean dark in color.. It can also be considered rich in color so your brighter shades can fall in that category as well.dark makeupr

2. Make-up is meant to be fun but don’t go overboard ladies. Makeup should be an enhancement not a complete change in your natural beautiful features. You can wear it on a daily basis if need be but definitely tweak it a little for the evenings.  Always remember this; When you brighten the eye or smoke the eye you always want to lighten the mouth..go for your nudes. But when you lighten the eyes or do nude shades, a simple liner and mascara you can darken or brighten the lip. Reds bright pink, orange and your dark colors like deep plum, purples and dark Browns are great in this scenario.makeupsmokey-eye-look-soft-romantic
3. Contouring has always been done by professional makeup artist which is where I think it should stay because people are going over board ..it’s not an everyday look.  I think it should just be for special occasions ..photo shoots and stage
4. Have great brows it shapes your face. The first step to the perfect eyebrow is the correct color that your use.  You should always use a slanted eyebrow brush with a powder or gel.. Pencils have a tendency to look drawn on. So don’t do it.”

Fresco Begins: a short story by abesi

0

FrescoKaneIf you don’t know the name Fresco Kane, don’t worry you will soon enough. Just be patient.  Fresco’s story began a  few years ago, when the producer turned artist was signed by Epic Records. It sounds like a dream come true, considering 70% of the people in your hometown are still trying to make it as rappers right?  Well, the former Epic Records signee had created an enormous buzz in the Midwest before getting signed.  At the time, Fresco went by Gena and his song, “Dip in the Club” produced by Star producer, Tarboy of the Trackboyz had dominated the airwaves for an entire year. Tarboy has always had the magic touch and somehow he’s always able  to take a hip hop song and transform it into becoming a pop crossover success (check his resume).  So, with an addictive sound,a crossover appeal and producing talent of his own, powered by star producers, it was a given that Fresco Kane would be next in line to fill the  St.Louis/East St.Louis void in hip hop. With Jermaine Dupri and L.A Reid on board everyone was certain he would amass to the mega success attained by his fellow STL comrade, Nelly but something happened on the way to hip hop royalty.  A few things were lost in the rap fire but all things happen as they should making chapter 2 of Fresco’s story that much more interesting. They say “you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become become a villain.” This is when darkness becomes your ally but even the dark knight rises when they use those things to turn their situation around. Feeling ostracized like an immigrant in foreign territory is exactly what Fresco needed to become greater.   “I went to being close to the top, to losing it all and seeing the people around me do disappearing acts better then any magician,” begins Fresco. The story gets deep but its not time for me to share that right now.  Fresco’s upcoming mix-tape will speak for itself. For now the stars shine down on the once and future Midwest prince who is back to take his crown. He’s learned a lot in three years.  He has a new single featuring Jazze Pha with an appearance from Jermaine Dupri but this is only the beginning.  Despite what you have seen and heard.  It is just now that Fresco Begins. You better keep up with him to see how the story unfolds. To be continued… by Abesi Manyando

HBO cancels U2 Paris show & says bombing took place where Beyonce & Jay-Z performed

by Abesi Manyando

No, the show will not play on as U2 canceled their upcoming Paris concert  that was to be captured by HBO this past Saturday. Sending their condolences, thoughts and prayers, U2 tweeted the following, “In our thoughts and prayers.  Tonight’s Paris show, HBO broadcast and twitter Q and A will not be taking place.”  According to The Belfast Telegraph, the band said they watched the events unfold in “disbelief and shock” and they were devastated. U2 is set to perform in Belfast and said that although it was not their decision to cancel they respect HBO’s decision.  The American Rock and Blues band, Eagles of Death Metal were performing at the Bataclan theater when terrorist attacked and killed 109 people.

HBO Director of Talent Relations, Mark Maynard arrived in Paris on Friday night for what would have been a taping of U2’s Parisian tour stop. Unbeknownst to him, the Paris attacks had just taken place.

beyonceotr“You didn’t know what was going on — were they going to strike hotels? — and things progressively got crazier and crazier,” Maynard told  Billboard. “Realizing that where the bomb went off [at nearby soccer stadium Stade de France] was where HBO did the Beyonce-Jay Z concert last year, that was really scary.”  Beyonce and Jay-Z had a memorable show for their record-breaking “On the Run” tour last year.

Madonna addressed the Paris attacks during her show in Germany saying that the only way we can fight these type of situations is by treating “every human being with respect.” As of today, Prince, Foo Fighters, Marilyn Manson and Coldplay have all postponed their shows in Paris. Boko Haram victim speaks out about the atrocities she endured

1

Nigerian-girls-abducted-Bring-Back-Our-Girls-20

In the wake of the Paris attacks by extremists, I revisited  the story of a Nigerian woman who shared her  painful memories of the horror she and many children endured at the hands of terror group, Boko Haram.

Bring back our girls was a popular hashtag and that in itsef is the tragedy of the situation.  Things happen and everyone on social media joins the trend but what happends when the trend disappear because the violence doesn’t.  Do we care/  i mean do we really care about what these extremists are doing around the world? The extremists who target innocent people, like the residents in Paris who were simply enjoying their Friday night are spread out all over the world. Beirut, Kenya, and Nigeria are just a few countries that have been harshly impacted by extreme fundamentalists without a disregard of life. Earlier this year a few of the young girls and women that were under Boko Haram terror were released but the struggle continues. I hope the world continues to keep their eyes on Nigeria and assist the innocent people who have to endure the horrors imposed by extremists. The situation happening around the world should not just be a hashtag trend.  I understand when the media disappears so does the intrest of many but please don’t forget about the injustice and crisis going on because we are all affected in the end. This was an article I wrote earlier this year for the Source.
300 women and children have been freed from captivity and the horrific assaults and rapes imposed on them by vicious Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram who target women and children. Some of those victims are now speaking out.
Boko Haram has been targeting schools since 2010. One of their attacks last year ignited a firestorm of media attention and outcry when the terrorists entered a well to do private boarding school in Chibok Borno state Nigeria and kidnapped 300 girls. Activists launched “The Bring Back our Girls” campaign but as soon as the media frenzy died so did the focus to rescue many women and children who are still being kidnapped and raped everyday by Boko Haram.
Recently almost 300 women and children have been brought to safety but a number of them died in the crossfire between the military and terrorists. Overall 700 victims have been freed. Former hostages who survived are now revealing the atrocities they endured under Boko Haram. Their somber stories somehow mirror those of holocaust survivors. Although many always say they cannot believe the Holocaust was allowed to happen, history is repeating itself while the world ignores the genocide Boko Haram is currently committing.
Lami Musa who survived told her story to BBC. She says that the husband and sons of the women captured were shot on sight by Boko Harem and taken into the Sambisa forest. Many of the women were sold into marriage, some were stoned to death and others were repeatedly raped. They were fed ground maize once a day and the children were purposely malnutritioned as well. Some women watched as others were killed day by day and sold into marriage. Musa, 27, says she avoided being sold off into marriage after Boko Harem terrorist discovered she was pregnant.
“When they realised I was pregnant, they said I was impregnated by an infidel [her husband] and they killed him,” she said. The militants told her that “once you deliver in a week’s time we will marry you to our commander”.
“I delivered at night and we were rescued by the soldiers the following morning,” Ms Musa revealed.

Unmasking the Unlabelled Awards

A general view as the Duke Blue Devils play the Michigan State Spartans during the NCAA Men's Final Four Semifinal at Lucas Oil Stadium on April 4, 2015 in Indianapolis.

You may not know who Carol “Butterfli Tia” Dunkley is but you will soon enough.  In fact the budding entrepreneur and socialite is making it her goal to make sure that the public knows about more entrepreneurs and amazing people who do great things behind the scenes. Dunkley created the Unlabelled Award to honor the stars behind the scenes who are making an imprint in our lives without our notice.  From the creator of Instagram and Snapchat to the producers and songwriters who create the memorable songs on our playlist and the stylists and make-up artists who keep our favorite stars shining–the unlabelled awards recognizes them all.

gucci-color-block

“There are women and men who work tirelessly behind the scenes to create the finished products that we all marvel about,” said Dunkley. “Im honoring them in New York during fashion week and Atlanta. So many beautiful people are responsible for the end results of the things we love. It could be a look, music, a film, a song, a T.V show– whatever it is, it requires the labor of love from an individual that may never get credit or be recognized in the limelight.

These people are designers, make-up artists, techies, publicists, songwriters, media people, stylists the list goes on and on. I think it’s a little disheartening that they must always remain in the shadow of oblivion or in the background that many never get access to. What I wanted to do is celebrate all of these people. They deserve an award and their own moment in time,” explained Dunkley. The Jamaican born entrepreneur is  a mom and sees herself like the everyday person but she has a dream to take the unlabelled Awards far.To check out the full nominations and to become a sponsor, follow and contact  Tia on her instagram: @fachionbloc

Reporter, Julien Pearce recounts eye-witness Paris terror attacks

0

police2At least sixty people have been reported dead in a horrific terror attack in Paris.  The situation is still unfolding as Paris becomes another target of terror. Reportedly there are about 100 people being held hostage in the Bataclan theatre after a performance by American rock band, Eagles of Death Metal.  They are also unconfirmed reports of suicide bombing outside of  the football (soccer) stadium that was captured on television.  The explosion is heard as the players pass the ball.  As we write, BFMTV is reporting that people are being slaughtered inside as hostages wait for the police or military to intervene. In the past few days suicide bombs were launched in Beirut and Baghdad.

Currently they are six to eight people holding one hundered people as hostages. Julien Pearce, Reporter and eyewitness escaped the theater through an exit.  He saw around twenty injured and dead bodies on the floor as he escaped.  He was able to grab a small teenager and help her flee with him. Pearce was able to run and catch a taxi which he ordered to the hospital for the young teenager.   “It was a bloodbath.   I have some friends still inside. I saw the face of one of the terrorist. He was very young and they were not masked.  I heard just the yelling and screaming of people.  They shot rounds for more then 15 minutes,” said Pearce.

Gwen Stefani and the nanny diaries

Gwen-Stefani-LMB-Returns-Fashion-Week-VideoDear Nanny, How could you?  You had one job to do but you couldn’t just do that could you?  Of all the people to hurt, did it really have to be our favorite pop singer who repeatedly said all she wanted was “a simple kind of life, to be somebody’s wife.”  For god sakes she already endured a heartbreak with her first love and band-member. I guess you weren’t around to enjoy everything that was “don’t speak?”  Although this may seem like you’re being singled out and Mr. Rossdale  is not to blame, don’t worry that post is coming and has on other sites Nanny, do you realize how difficult you have now made it for all the young white women lining up to fill nanny positions in Beverly Hills, the Upper Eastside and Buckhead? As if the Ben Affleck fiasco wasn’t enough and the “no hot nannies” rule didn’t make things more difficult, here you come along.  I have more to say Nanny but frankly i’m tired. I feel sad for Gwen and her children and her Harajuku styled pets. That is all for now.  The only good thing that is going to come out of this is a great album filled with songs that we will play over and over again & we’re all looking forward to Gwen’s partnership with petco for our furry loved ones.  So Gwen is going to be just fine.

sincerely,  Miss X

Maria Borges: The Angel who stole the show

After showcasing across the pond last year, the Victoria Secret show returned to it roots of New York City.  The  much-buzzed about fashion event was exactly that once again.  This year, there was a lot of focus on  Kendell Jenner and Gigi Hadid making their debut on the runway show that has become a ratings blockbuster and career booster for many of the models who grace the VS catwalk.  While a plethora of beautiful models in memorable ensembles took the stage, Angolan model Maria Borges stole the show.  The gorgeous model with bone-structure to die for was far from a newbie having graced the VS catwalk twice before but on for her third year on the runway, Borges ditched the signature California girl long  layered extensions that have become synonymous with the Victoria Secret show.  Instead, she walked the runway in her beautifully coiffed natural afro, showcasing all of her flawless African beauty and in the process she made history! Maria-Borges-Harpers-Bazaar-Brazil-Nicole-Heiniger-05

Borges who cut her hair before a Givenchy show says she told her agent she wanted to leave her hair natural for the Victoria Secret show as well and Victoria Secret had no objections.  “Fashion, Beauty, women and Africa made history through me, ” she tweeted.  “To all the African women, this is for you.  Shout to the new African women out there fighting for their dreams,” Borges wrote.

Alexandra Agoston, Jeneil Williams, Naomi Campbell, Ajak Deng

Although she has graced numerous magazines and covered Vogue, I think Borges will enter into a new pinnacle of success in her career, just like “her favorite model of all time” the legendary Naomi Campbell.  I believe this to be true because her story  is bigger then beauty or fashion. Her story is about history, courage and breaking the mold of what we’ve been taught and that comes with challenging the norm of acceptance without fear.  Maybe we can interview her in the future but for now I know there are millions of girls and  women from different parts of the world that are cheering for her. So, from one African girl to another, thank you Maria. Keep rising!
