How to manage your finances featuring DB Financial

acct3

Managing your finances, credit and investments is not an easy task at all but don’t think that you have to do this on your own.  Financial and credit consultants are not just for the rich and getting advice from them may be beneficial for anyone who feels overwhelmed with their finances.  Of course we can’t all afford Suzy Orman bt there are many people who offer advice and tips. Donnell Bobo of DB Financial helps people build their financial portfolio through personal and business credit consulting as well as investment consultation. Bobo says with the recession we had a few years ago and the housing market crash many people are trying to rebound from a financial fumble.  On top of that there are many entrepreneurs and creative artists who eat what they catch and create their own income as opposed to being guaranteed a paycheck every other week. In this instance it may be challenging to manage your finance. While the luxury of having your own business comes with freedom, peace and many rewards, the hustle and bustle of being an entrepreneur can take its toll on credit and money management.

Examine when is your best season of the year.  Focus on this in terms of marketing, sales and visibility and be prepared to capitalize on your best season but be smart enough to save during this  period. You must have a saving that you don’t really touch. Create a goal of what you want your monthly revenue to be and try and exceed your own expectations.

Overpay your bills.  If you have a car-note or credit card bill always overpay your bill.  If you owe $300 dollars maybe pay $310.00 so that this reflects on your credit card.

Have some business credit so you may be able to pull from this in the more difficult times and this way you’re not running so dry on your personal funds.

Have an investment that you are acquiring additional income from.  This could be stocks, real estate, bonds or other businesses.

In addition to these tips from Donnell Bobo, we have a few from US World News below.

1. Keep your credit card expenses to a minimum. If you’re like many young adults, you’re likely to keep a balance on your credit card. If so, then think about shopping for the right low interest card to lower your credit card bills. If you’re doing a consistent job of paying your balance in full each month, then using a card with a rewards program is a much better deal, since these cards tend to offer higher rewards along with relatively higher APRs. But if you don’t maintain a balance, you’ll be able to avoid paying interest while earning and enjoying those free benefits.

2. Look for alternatives to credit cards. If you see yourself as the ultimate spendthrift, then perhaps a debit card could work for you instead of a standard credit card. Sometimes, we just need to work with limited resources in order for us to learn how to discipline ourselves.

3. Make it a habit to use coupons. A lot of people are now turning to coupons as well as to cash-back shopping sites for special deals. You’ll be surprised by how much you can save just by being resourceful.

4. Learn how to budget. When you’re first starting out, having a budget can provide you structure for the way you handle your finances. You’ll develop discipline by adhering to your budget and by respecting its boundaries. Let’s drill down a little further to see how it’s done:

What Ava DuVernay’s sold-out barbie tells us about the need for diversity

I am a huge supporter of Ava DuVernay and have been for a long time.  I’m inspired by her courage, truth and passion. I have followed her transition as a Public Relations Executive to being a noted writer and filmmaker. To mirror a fraction of her success as a creative Black woman who has materialized her dreams would be honorable for me.  So naturally when Mattel announced that they would be selling an Ava Barbie, I was excited and ready to buy, but not even 15  minutes later I was dismayed when I discovered the Ava Barbies had sold out in minutes.  I went on twitter and found that I could buy my Ava Barbie on Amazon only to be disappointed again because the Ava Barbie was sold out on Amazon as well.  I desperately went as far as wanting to shamelessly tweet Oprah and ask her for help on getting the doll since her and Ava are friends and in my mind Oprah already had a box of them somewhere— but my professionalism hindered my desire.ava1On a serious note, this is where the story begins. The Ava Barbie selling out in record time is a greater story within itself.  It’s one that needs to be heard. Nigerian animator, Adamu Waziri has been at the epicenter of this growing story but I’ll explain later. First I must introduce my niece who is a big piece of the story.

My little niece, London Liseli Blake is a pint-sized chocolate-coated pre-schooler whose brain capacity is advanced beyond her four years of existence.  Despite being soft-spoken and occasionally speaking in constant careless whispers, she knows exactly what she wants and is assertive about her needful things. For the latter years of her short life she has consumed herself in what she’ll describe as the finer things in childhood entertainment.  Shows such as Dora the Explorer, Kung Fu Panda, The Lion king, The Little Mermaid and Madagascar are on her lists of favorites in terms of cartoons.

londonpinkShe loved the African-Acapella inspired music in the Lion King just like I did because it is similar to the music we listen to, culturally. (we’re Zambian)  Familiarity often breeds acceptance.  London also loved Sebastian from the Little Mermaid because of his vocal ability and Jamaican accent. Interestingly enough there was something that I discovered in conversations  with a four year old that enlightened me.  The African/Black characters that London was attracted to in animation were rarely actual human beings.  Sure, Disney had the Black princess  and Dora & Doc McStuffins qualified as  minority cartoons  but that’s the thing- they are just that— in the acute minority!  In addition, London didn’t really have a cartoon series that she could accurately identify with  To complicate matters my sister, (Liywalli…Lilly for short )  said she constantly struggled to find dolls that mirrored London.   “The idea that I have to search high and low for a doll that resembles my daughter so that she can feel like she matters as much as the girls who have multiple shelves of dolls who resemble them is a difficult task for me and mothers who are not Caucasian,” This has been a personal struggle for my sister as she is adamant about making sure that nothing ever interferes with her daughter’s self esteem. The lack of representation and diversity in children’s toys and programming is no laughing matter nor is it a figment of the imagination.

Bino and Fino PR Pic-Relaxing in Bedroom

London’s rationalization of not seeing many dolls who look like her is simple.  She says, “It makes me sad but it’s because they don’t have a lot of brown crayons to make the dolls.” Normally, I would take it  into consideration that she was a child and simply agree but I didn’t.  I told her that wasn’t the reason.  What is the reason? I wondered what type of excuses distributors and creators of  dolls and children’s content dished out to validate their lack of consideration for children of color.  I could see some middle aged executives in the board room saying “We can’t make Black, Hispanic or Asian dolls because they won’t sell. Those people don’t have buying power.  It would be too risky.  Our revenue will decrease, our gross profit will plummet!!” (Remember this is all happening in my head) I seriously  contemplated  the effects of children consuming media that ignored their existence and the relationship between this and  their value.  Hhmm, very detrimental. My friend, Clinical psychologist Dr. Dwayne Buckingham said “its completely damaging to a child’s sense of worth and this kind of conditioning of being invisible carries on into adulthood and tampers with how children of color measure their sense of worth in society.”  On one particular shopping escapade,  I accompanied my sister as she searched for a doll for London and it was a more exhausting than I could have even imagined.  To be honest, I had no idea how significant the lack of diversity in animation and dolls was. Last year while browsing twitter I stumbled upon an illustration of Bino and Fino

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxFQ5bPkHkw

a Nigerian based educational cartoon that interrelated Africa in all aspects of their program.   The rising popular cartoon series about twins, Bino and Fino who live in a Sub-Saharan city in Africa with their family and close friend Zeena the magical butterfly was an immediate hit for London! In each episode Bino and Fino along with Zeena  explore different topics while discovering many aspects of life and the world. History, food, languages, electricity and other topics are all examined in the entertaining African-inspired series.  For London and her friends at Kidz Biz Academy in St. Louis MO, Bino and Fino’s appearance was enough to get them hooked.  “I like Fino because she looks like me,” says London. “Her skin is brown like mine and her hair  (afro puffs) is like mine too,” I discovered that London and her friend’ excitement was simply about feeling included.  Waziri purposely created The Bino and Fino show with a Pan-African approach because he said most of the cartoons that  children were watching in Nigeria were imported and the characters didn’t resemble the children or their culture. There was a dangerous lack of balance.  He spoke with Arise news about this imbalance. Instead of waiting for Disney or someone to create a cartoon series Waziri created one himself.  This march after being disappointed on another Wal-Mart shopping trip, London told me to ask Adamu to “just make a Fino doll”  and he has done exactly this. He even created an educational resource  blog that gives parents information about all things African inspired including schools, programs, toys and books that may be hard to find. Now that the Ava doll sold out in minutes, I hope that distributors and retailers understand that there is a need out here for young children who just want to be included. For parents like my sister who struggle to find content that mirror the type of education and representation they want for their children, you now have the Bino and Fino series  and hopefully more cartoons and toys to come from other creatives who aren’t going to wait for manufacturers to change their thinking.  – Abesi Manyando

Act like an entrepreneur, think like a journalist

by Malena Amusa

Five years ago, I retired from a career in journalism, and dove into starting a business – a premier dance company in St. Louis. The shift from reporter to entrepreneur immediately surprised me.  Why? Because I quickly found that the same skills required to write for top newspapers were the same skills needed to ignite my business. It was journalism, not business-as-usual, that turned my no-name dance firm into a high-buzz, go-to agency, entertaining millions.

Malena dance 1

A month into launching Addlife! Studio, I started working the phones, hustling up event partners, and directly marketing to potential clients.  I needed to frontline my niche in the market – African Dance. Addlife! offered weekly courses in African Dance, in addition to tickets to original musicals I choreographed and produced. Focusing on the “bottom line” simply was not a sufficient strategy for growing my business. Rather, it was thinking like the star editor of my business that got me dozens of clients and thousands of ticket-buyers.

malenainspire

So what exactly did this journalism look like? Well, first I kicked-off each day researching studios, schools, libraries and other businesses in the region that needed my service. Then, as if my life depended on it, I sent oodles of introductory emails to key decision makers at these agencies. Like a fierce reporter chasing the lead story, I hunted down names and placed calls daily. To market my company, I wrote press release after release, and personally called reporters at local newspapers to gain coverage of my events. On Facebook, I shared the inspiring story of my rising company, offering messages of motivation.  Whenever I gained a new student or partner, I picked their brains about ways to improve my service, and to invite their friends to join the Addlife! movement. At every event, I had a photographer and videographer, and used this footage to report on my company’s achievements, inspiring potential clients to get involved.

Within six months, my company bloomed. Within a year, we had sold out events & packed classes.  Now Addlife! is more than a studio. By thinking like a reporter, I’ve been able to recruit a global network of Africa’s top entertainers. Seeing a need to connect elite venues with the best African talent, I launched Addlife! World, an entertainment, production and booking agency, currently partnered with four of the world’s most exciting, pioneering, and masterful dancers, singers, and musicians.

By being a journalist first, and a business woman second, I kept my name swirling in a tight-knit industry, and boldly marketed my company by keeping the conversation going on and offline. This year has been the most successful yet.  I secured a contract touring with Cirque Zuma Zuma, America’s biggest African circus, in addition to teaching at the newly-minted DSPAC in Brooklyn launched by Oprah Winfrey and Ailey star Dwana Smallwood. Researching top dance companies in Africa, I successfully connected with Nigeria’s premier QDance Center and launched a series of master classes in the heart of Lagos.

Journalism gives you the power to make things happen instantly and will work wonders for your business.  Picking up the phone, marketing your company, sending emails, and researching key partners and opportunities will generate the work and team you need. This is the fastest way to dominate your field. Whatever your enterprise, think of the top 50 people you want to partner with and call them today! Research changes in the market place and innovate and create programs to shape the market.

Ballet star Misty Copeland, the first black principal ballerina at American Ballet Theater (ABT), knows what I’m talking about. Her brilliant use of Twitter and viral videos catapulted her to world-wide prominence. By the time ABT promoted her, Copeland had hundreds of thousands of fans.  Ballet made her a force. But journalism made her a global star. “The path to your success is not as fixed and inflexible as you think,” Copeland says. Each of us holds the pen to authoring our destiny.

How to stay fit for the holidays

Running-WinterWe all know that out of any time of the year, the holidays are when we really luxuriate in food, meals, drinks and oh those to-die for desserts (and lets not forget those specialty  made cakes  and Patti Pies will be stocked up by Christmas). With all this immersion in holiday food going on you might be wondering if it is possible to enjoy the holidays and stay fit.  The answer is yes, yes, yes!!! Since everyone is asking and wondering how it can be done we had our resident celebrity trainer, B Nichols stop by 7th & Lotus and give us holiday tips to stay in shape!

  1. Timing is everything.  So you want to pick and choose when you eat. In the morning 30 minutes after waking up you should have something in your stomach.  B recommends a green smoothie (spinach apples, mix fruit, kale, flax seed etc) After breakfast in the morning you should do workout. Strength and resistance (if you’re at home do mountain climbers, high knees, burpees.  If you can get in  the gym get your cardio in ( ex. running, sprints, jump rope, swimming, light weights and high repetition of all of that)  Get your protein shake in after.  Lunch we want to keep it simple.  Definitely have green vegetables  and perhaps for non vegetarians Bake, broiled or grilled fish or chicken and for some of you potato enthusiasts lunch is a great time to get in your baked or mashed potatoes.  You should try to never have dinner after 8.  Ideally between 6 and 7:30 is the perfect dinner. Lots of veggies, some protein based food and lots of water.  If you want to indulge in some holiday food, eat early so you can burn it off or immediately after your workout. If you’re going to be eating more you need to do a lot of cardio to burn off those calories.– Follow B. Nichols on instagram @bnicholsatl

Spike Lee releases Chi-raq: Chance the Rapper & Pohhla give their take

spikeLights…Camera…Action…Through the lens of the front lines,  soldiers of  inner city urban communities like Chicago and St. Louis are experiencing what can only be defined as a domestic war. For some families that have experienced loss to gun-violence they  feel that they are alone in their struggle and no one is telling their story.  A few mothers that we spoke with feel that there is a loss of troops, politicians and leaders combating in their defense or engaging them in a way that will produce hope in this drastic situation. Ground breaking and influential director, Spike Lee has captured the nation’s  attention with the release of his latest movie Chi-Raq that explores the violence in Chicago through a satirical Shakespearean approach. The trailer was met with both criticism and support.  There are people like the mayor of Chicago who feel Lee should not have portrayed the city of Chicago in “such a negative way.”  I personally believe that a light needs to be shined on the current conditions of not only, Chicago, but other urban communities.  Acting like the problem doesn’t exist won’t make the issue go away. In a recent and very explosive interview with Windy City Live, Spike Lee argued against critics who disapproved of the title and mere creation of his film but offered no solutions or actions to the reality of the problem.  Lee discussed the recent killing of nine-year old, Tyshawn Lee, who was executed in a Southside Chicago neighborhood earlier this month. He  argued that “the movie didn’t stop Tyshawn Lee from being executed..”  The story of the nine-year old’s horrific death sparked national attention  furthering  the idea and image of Chicago being a disassociated city of violence.  Lee pointed out that he involved the mothers and families of many victims of violence in the  film including Jennifer Hudson who appears in Chi-raq.  Nevertheless, there are a few people and artists who criticize Spike Lee for being a New Yorker that is presenting a film about Chicago. Chicago artist, Chance the rapper isn’t holding his tongue about his disdain for Lee’s film. He expressed utter disgust of the film that takes a Shakespearean satirical  approach to Chicago’s violence problem.

Chance_the_Rapper2

“Let me be the one from Chicago to personally tell you we not supporting this film out here. That shi- gets zero love out here. Shi- is goofy and it’s a bunch of people from no around here telling you to support that shi- Its exploitative and problematic,” argued Chance. He justified his thoughts by saying that “the idea that women abstaining from sex would stop murders is offensive and a slap in the face to any mother that lost a child here.” Chance the Rappers aired out his feelings in a series of tweets.

ChiraqBefore Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq was the talk of the nation, a single entitled Anti-Chiraq had caught the Midwest by storm last year. Chicago’s hometown star, Pohhla  released the single to share the stories of the families affected by violence in Chicago.  The accompanying video was a chilling reality check of the astronomical number of victims who had died due to gun violence in the city.  To be honest  we assumed that Pohhla would have been part of the Chiraq film or soundtrack.   Pohhla differs with Lee’s critics saying he doesn’t understand the ideology behind the criticism. “If those people were very concerned why didn’t they shoot their own film and documentary? Better yet, why aren’t they offering suggestions and actions to stop the violence.

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ-ODMY1Ojc

There were no actors in Pohhla’s  video.  Instead “Anti-Chiraq was a truthful mini-documentation  of families who were dealing with the morning after pain of burying their loved ones.  Everything was real. In the song  Pohhla denounced the acceptance of the term Chiraq and identified the problems of embracing the name.  “We become what we embrace. The violence we see today is not the violence that we used to see.  When everyone’s mindset is accepting of the fact that we are living as if we are at war, we become immune to the violence, the victims and the killing,”  explains Pohhla.  “There are a lot of people that seem to want to live up to the name “Chiraq”.  He spoke more about this in an indepth interview with Urban Cusp.  Pohhla recalls growing up in the west and Eastside of Chicago and experiencing violence. “It wasn’t like this though.  This is a war. Unlike many that live in the Southside of Chicago, Pohhla says he was able to see other places and travel. He even lived in Atlanta for a period of time with his mother. “Most of these guys have never been out of their neighborhood, so they don’t know nothing else…” Pohhla identifies with the struggle in the city and feels that it is hard when you have no support. He understands the direction, Spike Lee is taking with his new movie and believes it’s a start to a more positive direction because it brings light to the epidemic, sparking conversation that may lead to change and legislation. “You can’t hide from the truth or silence creative artist bringing attention to the problem, that’s problematic in itself.  If politicians are embarrassed about this portrayal of Chicago maybe just maybe this will force them to invest in education, after-school programs and tangible economic solutions that will keep kids off the streets.  Spike isn’t exploiting the situation he’s reporting about it in his way, making you aware.”

Pohhla has a foundation which brings awareness to the violence in the city and specifically works to create activities for kids to be a part of,—giving them something to do and focus on other than the pain they can’t close their eyes to. Chi-Raq hits theaters today.   –Diamon Turman with additional reporting by  Abesi Manyando

A (RED) shopping extravaganza featuring Bono, Scarlett Johansson, Snoop Dogg, The Weeknd, Meryl Streep and more will live on-air and online through the holidays, selling  iconic (RED) products, limited edition pieces, and the chance for fans to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences with celebrities in partnership with the online giving platform, Omaze. Raising money for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, every dollar will be matched by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, up to $20 million, meaning there have never been more reasons to SHOP (RED) and SAVE LIVES.

ENTER TO WIN ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCES THROUGH OMAZE WITH BONO, SNOOP DOGG, GAME OF THRONES, THE WEEKND, KIM KARDASHIAN, MERYL STREEP & SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, AMONG MANY OTHERS

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation double impact by matching every dollar raised up to $20 MILLION  “The progress we have made in the fight against AIDS is immense, but so is the jeopardy if we grow complacent and think we’ve conquered this vicious little virus… Because we haven’t! We have to keep pushing until everyone who needs treatment can get it and until we can prevent the millions of unnecessary new infections we are still seeing every year,” said Bono, co-founder of (RED) and ONE. “Justice often calls for the power of strange bedfellows, which is why (SHOPATHON)RED is where you’ll see everyone from Bill Gates to Snoop Dogg, Vice and Game of Thrones campaigning to get closer to finishing AIDS once and for all.”

bonoredIn 2006, Bono and Bobby Shriver began paving the way for a new generation. An AIDS FREE GENERATION. They founded (RED) with a simple mission—to make it easy for people and businesses to join the fight against the deadly virus.

The facts: AIDS has killed more than 34 million people since its discovery in 1983. More than 37 million people are living with HIV, and mothers continue to pass the virus in startling numbers to their children.

Life-saving anti-retroviral treatments cost less than 40 cents a day, yet most AIDS victims won’t see medicine in their lifetime. We’re determined to change that.

Throughout the past decade, (RED) has raised more than $320 million with the help of companies like Apple and Coca Cola. 100% of the money from our products and events goes directly to work on the ground—but we still have work to do.

There’s no question that progress has led to possibility. We can see an AIDS FREE GENERATION in our lifetime
